     Newspaper clipping:
"Behind all that brush is Fred Cavanaugh of West Rockport,
a plumber by trade these past 24 years, and an enthusiastic supporter of the
bicentennial celebration of Camden and Rockport which occurs in September.
Fred is not alone in the beard raising business, for several others have fostered
equally luxuriant growths as a feature of the celebration.
Not only is he a plumber, but he has a flock of 130 sheep on his farm which have
served as a common bond between him and the Hermit of Manana who has a flock on
the Atlantic outpost off Monhegan where he makes his home in a series of cliffside dwellings.
In his role as master of St. Paul's Lodge of Masons in Rockport, he perhaps is the first,
in a century or more, to occupy the East with a full beard. None of the members, not even
the oldest, can recall a master with even a moustache, let alone a gowth such as Fred has
raised and proudly displays.
We ventured the thought that all that beard must have been hot in the recent muggy weather,
but he allows it was really cool. Must serve as insulation and proves that the old-timers
had something going for comfort with their beards."
